Information on entry into the territory of Slovakia for Ukrainian citizens
According to the information of the Ministry of Interior, all persons fleeing the war conflict in Ukraine are allowed to enter the territory of Slovakia, including persons who do not have a valid travel document (biometric passport).
After entering the territory of the Slovak Republic, a foreigner may apply for a temporary refuge.
Temporary refuge is provided for the purpose of protection from war, endemic violence, the consequences of a humanitarian catastrophe or a systematic or mass violation of human rights in the country of origin. It is possible to apply for a temporary refuge upon entering the territory of the Slovak Republic at the border crossing point or at the Foreign Police Department according to the place of stary of the foreigner. In the case of minors, the declaration is made by the legal guardian (parent). Upon submission of the declaration, the foreigner’s travel document or other identity document is seized (it will be returned at the end of the temporary refugee procedure) and dactyloscopic fingerprints are taken.
Subsequently, it is necessary for the foreigner to report at the refugee camp in Humenné within 24 hours from making the application for a temporary refuge (the transport document is issued by the police), or in the case of secured accommodation in the Slovak Republic, foreigner can travel directly to this accommodation. The Ministry of Interior will decide on the provision of temporary refuge within 30 days from submitting the application (in justified cases, the period may be extended). After providing temporary refuge, the foreigner will receive tolerated residence card with identification as “ODÍDENEC” (which means person holding temporary refuge protection).
After providing temporary refuge, the foreigner may be employed without any further permits or restrictions.
At the same time, the possibility of financing the provision of accommodation to foreigners who were provided with temporary refuge in the Slovak Republic in connection with the war in Ukraine was approved. The contribution is to be provided from the state budget through the municipalities on whose territory the accommodation will be provided. The contribution will be provided to the landlord, while the contributions will be determined by the government depending on the real needs and possibilities of the state budget.
In addition to the request for temporary refuge, the foreigner may stay in the Slovak Republic on the basis of visa-free entry in compliance with legal conditions or may apply for international protection or residence permit at the relevant Foreign Police Department.
